Every month, all the major streaming services add a host of newly acquired (or just plain new) shows, movies, and documentaries into their ever-rotating libraries. So what’s a dedicated reader to watch? Well, whatever you want, of course, but the name of this website is Literary Hub, so we sort of have an angle. To that end, here’s a selection of the best (and most enjoyably bad) literary film and TV coming to streaming services this month. Have fun.
Happiness for Beginners
Netflix, July 27
Literary bona fides: based on Happiness for Beginners by Katherine Center (2015)
Ellie Kemper and Luke Grimes star in Vicky Wight’s adaptation of Katherine Center’s novel, in which a recently divorced woman meets a handsome stranger on the Appalachian trail. “I thought it was such a well-told story of one woman’s experience in getting to know herself better,” Kemper told Tudum. “I was immediately excited about the prospect of playing a woman whose outlook on life, when we first meet her, isn’t so sunny. I’ve played a lot of optimistic rubes, and Helen was neither.” Fair enough.
The Witcher (Season 3, Volume 2)
Netflix, July 27
Literary bona fides: based on The Time of Contempt by Andrzej Sapkowski (1995)
It’s Witcher superfan Henry Cavill’s last outing as stoic blonde bombshell Geralt of Rivia (RIP the most perfect casting of any literary adaptation ever); might as well soak it in.
Good Omens (Season 2)
Prime Video, July 28
Literary bona fides: based on Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s Good Omens (1990)
Good Omens was meant to be a limited series—and marketed as such when it first came out in 2019. But it was renewed for a second season anyway, with most of the cast returning, so I’ll reserve judgement until we see what Michael Sheen, David Tennant, and co. have for us. (And for those who love the binge, you’re in luck: Amazon will be releasing the whole second season on July 28.)
True Grit (1969)
Prime Video, July 1
Literary bona fides: based on True Grit by Charles Portis (1968)
John Wayne won his only Oscar for his portrayal of Marshal Rooster Cogburn in the first adaptation of one of the best Westerns (and best novels) ever written. It’s old fashioned for sure, but it still sings.
Die Hard (1988)
Hulu, July 1
Literary bona fides: based on Nothing Lasts Forever by Roderick Thorp (1979)
Obviously, The Best Christmas Movie of All Time—but also good in July—has literary roots. Sure, the movie is better than the book, but then in this case, it would have to be.
The Joy Luck Club (1993)
Hulu, July 31
Literary bona fides: based on The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan (1989)
Amy Tan co-wrote the adaptation of her beloved novel with Academy Award-winner Ronald Bass, and the result is . . . pretty much just as beloved. In 2020, the boundary-breaking film was deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” and entered into the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress.
The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
Prime Video, July 1
Literary bona fides: based on Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption by Stephen King (1982)
Actually a film about the power of libraries.
Jumanji (1995)
Netflix, July 1
Literary bona fides: based on Chris Van Allsburg’s Jumanji (1981)
As someone who grew up obsessed with Chris Van Allsburg, including his comparatively quiet (it’s in black and white!) picture book Jumanji, in which an enchanted board game brings strange consequences to a pair of children, you’d expect that I would be crotchety about the bombastic, Robin Williams-y adaptation. But it’s simply too much fun for that.
I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997)
Hulu, July 1
Literary bona fides: Lois Duncan’s I Know What You Did Last Summer (1973)
Duncan herself may have hated the film—which bears only a passing resemblance to her novel—but that doesn’t mean we all can’t enjoy it, especially now that it is firmly in schlocky throwback territory.
Pride & Prejudice (2005)
Netflix, July 1
Literary bona fides: based on Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen (1813)
A pretty good adaptation featuring a very fine Disgusting Brother Mr. Darcy.
No Country for Old Men (2007)
Prime Video, July 1
Literary bona fides: based on No Country for Old Men by Cormac McCarthy (2005)
Celebrate the life of Cormac McCarthy by watching this excellent (and faithful) Coen Brothers adaptation of his novel—which, fun fact, was originally written as a screenplay. But McCarthy couldn’t sell it, so he turned it into a novel, and then it became a film after all. Never say McCarthy didn’t do happy endings!
The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford (2007)
Prime Video, July 1
Literary bona fides: based on The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford by Ron Hansen (1983)
I don’t know why it’s western month in the world of streamers, but clearly it is. This one—unavoidably overbaked, but with superb performances all around—has become something of a sneaky cult classic.

]]>The Best Educational Games for SEN Support – In Collaboration with Orchard Toys
In England there are nearly 1.5 million pupils with special educational needs, SEN. 13% of children in primary school require SEN support and the percentage of pupils is continuing to rise. It’s so important that all children get the support that they need at home and when at school.
What children with SEN find challenging varies. Some children with SEN struggle with literacy or number-based activities while others find it a challenge to process and remember information. Generally, it’s true that pupils with SEN find it harder to learn how to spell words, how to tell the time and how to solve maths problems compared to children without any additional needs.
Orchard Toys offers a wide selection of educational games that help children learn through play in a stress-free way. They have lots of brilliant games that help children develop their literacy and numeracy skills and children playing these will have so much fun that they won’t realise that they’re learning. Orchard Toys games are always designed to be both educational and fun, have colourful illustrations and are made with thick, durable, high-quality card pieces.
There are many games from their wide range that are especially well-suited for children with special educational needs. We will look at some of these educational games for SEN support below so read on to find out more.

Next time you feel grateful for everyday conveniences that make your life so much easier, don't just assume there's a "he" behind these famous inventions. There's a good chance it may be a woman who used her brains, creativity, and tenacity to find a concrete solution to a shared problem.
Here's to celebrating the work of these unsung (s)heroes: the innovative women who've propelled humanity forward, one patent at a time! Our list features some of the most famous women inventors of our past who contributed greatly to science and technology. Plus, we'll highlight today's most noteworthy women in STEM who, standing on the shoulders of their brilliant predecessors, are actively shaping the world of tomorrow.
Margaret Eloise Knight is known for inventing a machine that could shape and glue paper into a flat-bottomed bag. The popularity of her invention caught the eye of a man who stole her idea to patent it himself. When Knight took him to court, he stated that a woman "could not possibly understand such mechanical complexities." Knight won the case by proving that she had designed the machine, earning herself the right to patent it. She invented over 100 machines during her career and patented 20 of them.

Elizabeth Magie crafted The Landlord's Game in 1904. This innovative board game served as a critique of unchecked capitalism and was the first version of the iconic Monopoly. However, Charles Darrow claimed her game as his own and sold it to Parker Brothers in 1935. Eventually, the company tracked down Magie, but only offered her $500 for her groundbreaking invention. In 2019, Hasbro (the company that now owns the game) received criticism for releasing Ms. Monopoly, a supposedly feminist version of the game that still doesn't recognize the woman behind the original concept.

Enhancing your bar with an effective game strategy can be a game-changer for attracting and delighting customers. However, there are key aspects to consider, from selecting the right games to optimizing your space and implementing creative marketing ideas to promote a thriving gaming atmosphere.
Understanding your customers’ demographics and preferences is crucial in selecting the most suitable games. Are they more inclined towards classic favorites or innovative options? Tailoring your game selection to their interests ensures maximum engagement and enjoyment, fostering a vibrant social atmosphere that keeps them coming back for more.
Efficiently utilizing space in your bar is essential for a seamless gaming experience. Strategically position games in areas that allow easy access and flow, avoiding overcrowding or disrupting other patrons. Balancing the placement of games with seating arrangements and bar service ensures a harmonious bar environment that caters to both gamers and non-gamers.
Once you have an exciting array of games, it’s crucial to promote them effectively. Leverage the power of social media platforms to showcase your games and generate buzz. Consider hosting special gaming events or tournaments to attract enthusiasts and novices alike. Collaborate with local influencers or game enthusiasts who can spread the word and create a sense of anticipation among your target audience. You may even learn how to plan a bar crawl with other local establishments to bring new customers through the door.
A fun game for a bar setting should be engaging, interactive, and promote social interaction among patrons. Games that are easy to learn and offer quick rounds or turns are ideal, allowing everyone to participate.
The game should also have an element of friendly competition and offer opportunities for laughter and camaraderie. Likewise, incorporating games that can be enjoyed while holding a drink adds to the bar experience, creating a lively and entertaining atmosphere.
Additionally, select games that connect to your specific bar themes or appeal to your bar’s target audience. For instance, a bar with a big corporate happy hour clientele may consider the best business board games, while one with a huge variance in customers may learn how to host a trivia night instead.
The best bar games encompass a range of preferences and skill levels. Classic favorites like pool, darts, and shuffleboard are perennially popular.
Other top choices include arcade games like Pac-Man and air hockey, as well as interactive group games such as beer pong, trivia and foosball. Ultimately, the best bar games are those that resonate with your specific clientele, provide a blend of fun and competition and create a memorable experience in your bar.
Board games add an element of strategy, creativity, and social interaction to the bar experience. They provide opportunities for patrons to engage in friendly competition, problem-solving and cooperative play.
Board games also encourage conversations, laughter, and bonding among players, fostering a sense of community and camaraderie. There are also relaxing games that can help patrons unwind. Whether it’s classics like chess or modern favorites like Settlers of Catan, board games offer a unique and enjoyable way for customers to unwind and connect in a bar setting.
Arcade games are experiencing a resurgence in modern bars due to their nostalgic appeal and ability to create an immersive and entertaining atmosphere. Arcade games offer a blend of excitement, skill and competition, attracting a wide range of customers.
These popular games provide an interactive and tactile gaming experience that differs from digital entertainment, promoting social interaction and friendly rivalries. Additionally, the retro charm and timeless gameplay of arcade classics resonate with both older generations and younger enthusiasts, making them a hit in modern bars.
For a small bar, consider incorporating tabletop games like Jenga or Connect Four, which are space-efficient and promote interaction among customers. Another idea is to offer unique card games or dice games with a twist, such as “Shot Roulette” or “Dicey Drinkers,” which combine chance and drinking elements.
You also can introduce social deduction games like, “Werewolf” or “One Night Ultimate Werewolf,” which engage groups in captivating storytelling and deductive reasoning, adding intrigue and excitement to the bar experience.
People play a variety of games at bars, depending on personal preferences and the available offerings. Common games include pool, darts, shuffleboard and arcade classics like Pac-Man and pinball.
Drinking games such as Flip Cup and Beer Pong are also popular for their social and competitive nature. Board games like chess or Settlers of Catan, as well as interactive group games like trivia or charades, are enjoyed by those seeking intellectual stimulation and friendly interaction in a bar setting.
One of the best classic arcade games to play at a bar is undoubtedly Pac-Man. Its timeless gameplay, iconic characters, and addictive nature make it a universally recognized favorite.
Pac-Man offers quick rounds and a simple objective, making it accessible to players of all ages and skill levels. Its retro charm and nostalgic appeal, coupled with the thrill of chasing high scores, create an engaging and enjoyable arcade experience that perfectly complements the vibrant atmosphere of a bar.

]]>But does that mean that you have to settle for a wasted day? Not at all. Saturday is most likely your favorite day of the week, so it’s important to make the most of it, no matter what’s going on with the weather, and even if you have to stay inside. Follow these tips to take full advantage of your rainy day at home.
There aren’t too many opportunities to spend longer than normal under the covers, but a rainy Saturday morning is one of them. If the sun was shining you’d want to jump up and make the most of it. But when it’s raining cats and dogs? You’ll know that you have nowhere to be and nothing to do, and that allows you to fully embrace the comfort of being in bed. Alternatively, you can take your duvet to the couch and watch some Saturday morning cartoons with your family.
There are times when you’ll want to eat breakfast quickly so you can get the day underway. But on a rainy Saturday morning, breakfast doesn’t have to be purely functional; it can be an activity within itself. This is a chance to push the boat out slightly and put together a breakfast that is out of the ordinary. You could follow this blueberry muffin recipe for an easy breakfast that your kids will love, or you could go big with a full English breakfast. Whatever you decide to do, make sure it’s an event, and be sure to rope in your family to help, too.
We know we said that this was a rainy Saturday at home, but we think there’s some value in getting out of the house for at least a little while, even if it’s a torrential downpour. Throw on your waterproof clothing, grab your umbrellas, and go for a short walk. You’ll get a little wet, but it’s only water, and you’ll feel oh-so-happy to get back to your cosy home.
And what about when you’re back home? A rainy afternoon is a good opportunity to have some fun with the kids. Depending on their ages, this could involve playing a board game, engaging in an arts and crafts project, or simply making make-believe with their favorite toys.
Once that fun is over, it’ll be time to settle in for the evening. Make the night special by hosting your own family movie night. Pick one of those all-time classic family movies, make some popcorn, and sink into the sofa wearing your comfortable clothing. It’ll be the perfect end to a perfect day.

]]>Asking your spouse questions keeps things fun and fresh. Keeping the conversation going can help you to connect to your spouse and really open more doors for love and intimacy.
I wanted to share some funny questions for couples to get the conversation going. You can take one question per night and use it to stir up other conversations.
Laughter is a stress reliever, and we all could use some of that. Laughing with each other helps to keep things light and fun.
Funny questions help to create avenues for good and genuine conversations. It is good and healthy to laugh with your significant other often!
So what should you do with these funny questions? There are lots of fun and creative ways to use funny questions, so let’s explore them!
Game Night: Create a game night where you take turns asking each other these funny questions. Keep score, and the one with the most hilarious or creative answers wins!
Road Trip Entertainment: During a long car ride, ask each other these questions to pass the time and keep the journey entertaining. You’ll learn new things about each other and have a good laugh along the way.
Dinner Table Conversations: Spice up your dinner conversations by randomly picking a question and discussing your answers together. It’s a great way to lighten the mood and bring some laughter to the table.
Date Night Icebreaker: Start your date night with a fun and light-hearted atmosphere by asking a couple of these questions to break the ice. It will set a playful tone and create a relaxed and enjoyable environment.
Couple’s Game Night with Friends: Invite other couples over for a game night and incorporate these funny questions as part of the games you play. It will bring laughter and entertainment to the group while getting to know each other better.
Social Media Challenge: Share a funny question as a post or story on your social media accounts and encourage your friends and followers to share their answers too. It can lead to amusing conversations and interactions online.
Pillow Talk: Before bed, take turns asking each other a funny question. It’s a light-hearted way to end the day, share a laugh, and strengthen your connection as a couple.
These are some of my favorite funny questions for married couples. These questions are fun to ask and see what the other says!
Did you know that newer couples often know a lot more about their significant other than couples that have been together for longer? This is because they are curious and ask lots of questions!
These questions would also be fun to do at a wedding reception with the newly married couple turned away from one another. The bride can have her shoe and one hand and the grooms in another (same for the groom).
Then if they think the answer to the question is them they raise their shoe, and if its the other person they raise that person’s shoe.
These are funny questions for new couples!
Enjoy these funny questions and have a great time getting to know each other better in a fun and light-hearted way!
These questions are fun and quirky for couples that are getting to know each other. But remember, just because you have been together for a long time doesn’t mean you can’t or shouldn’t ask these questions.
These questions will help you explore each other’s interests, preferences, and experiences, fostering a deeper understanding and connection as you get to know one another better. Enjoy the process of discovering new things about each other!
Road trips can be long and boring, so why not spice them up with funny couples! This gives you a chance to be relieved of boredom and learn more about your significant other.
These funny questions will keep the road trip lively, entertaining, and filled with laughter as you enjoy each other’s company and create unforgettable memories together.
Game nights are a fun way to connect and get out of your shell. Adding in funny questions for couples can really bring the laughs!
I love playing would you rather! It is such a fun game to play and see what your significant other would rather do and why!
These funny “Would You Rather” questions will create laughter, spark entertaining conversations, and provide an opportunity for couples to learn more about each other’s preferences and sense of humor. Enjoy the playful and amusing moments they bring to your time together!
I love knowing little details about my husband, and these questions help to spark fun and deeper questions so you can really get to know them. I love it when I remember something sort of minor and surprise my husband!
These funny “This or That” questions will inspire lighthearted discussions, playful debates, and moments of laughter between couples. Enjoy discovering each other’s preferences and sharing amusing insights along the way!
These slightly dirty questions will get you and your partner giggling and potentially lead to something more! To be intimate with someone is more than just sex, but really knowing them.
Slightly dirty questions are a great way to open up the floor for good and healthy conversations!
Please remember to always maintain open communication and respect each other’s boundaries when discussing intimate topics. These slightly dirty questions can help couples explore their desires, enhance intimacy, and foster a deeper connection.
Vulnerability is important in a relationship, even if that means you get laughed at! Don’t take life too seriously and share some of your potentially embarrassing moments by asking some funny questions.
Remember, the goal is to create laughter and embrace the humor in these potentially embarrassing moments. Enjoy the conversation and have fun reminiscing about these experiences together!
Laughter is the best medicine. Here are my best tips for asking funny questions for couples.
Keep it light-hearted: The purpose of asking funny questions is to create a fun and enjoyable atmosphere. Avoid asking sensitive or controversial questions that may dampen the mood.
Know your audience: Consider the personality and sense of humor of your partner or the couple you’re asking the questions to. Tailor the questions to their preferences to ensure they’ll find them funny and enjoyable.
Use open-ended questions: Instead of asking questions that can be answered with a simple “yes” or “no,” ask questions that encourage elaboration and storytelling. This allows for more engaging and entertaining conversations.
Be playful and non-judgmental: Encourage your partner or the couple to answer honestly and without fear of judgment. Embrace the humor in their responses and keep the conversation light and fun.
Share your own answers: Make the conversation a two-way street by answering the questions yourself. This creates a sense of equality and encourages open communication.
Timing is everything: Choose the right moment to ask the funny questions. Road trips, game nights, or relaxed evenings are ideal times to inject humor and entertain each other with funny questions.
Build on the answers: Use the responses to the funny questions as a starting point for further discussions or anecdotes. This can lead to even more laughter and deeper connections between the couple.
Embrace the laughter: Remember, the goal is to have fun and share a laugh together. Enjoy the humorous moments, witty exchanges, and the joy that comes from asking and answering funny questions.
By following these tips, you can create a light-hearted and enjoyable atmosphere where funny questions can bring laughter, and entertainment, and strengthen the bond between couples.
The bottom line is that it’s important to keep the spark alive. Laughter connects you and keeps things light and fun, even during tougher moments.
These questions I shared are meant to bring you together, learn more about one another and laugh.
Do you have any more funny questions to add? I’d love to know in the comments below!

]]>As I mentioned in a recent post, visiting Evermore Park was one of the neater experiences my family has had of late. While there, my son and I spoke with artist Jared Horton of the shop Petulant Pudgies, where he makes cool stuff like D&D character creator dice, original sculptures, and his very own passion project card game, Monster Workshop.
I knew right off the bat that Monster Workshop was exactly the sort of game my 11yo son would be into. In it, you play as a mad scientist racing to construct a monster out of various types of body parts (plus a special power or two) before the other players at your table can. Just as an example, your monster could be comprised of robotic legs, the torso of a yeti, the head of a space alien, and the arms of a nightmare.
The first two scientists (out of six max) to finish their monsters get to have their creations battle one another, and whoever wins two fights wins the game.
Each game takes only 15 minutes to complete and the strategy is relatively light, so it’s perfect for kids and adults with short attention spans (*raises hand*).
“When it comes to Monster Workshop, I am the very definition of biased, but I feel like we’ve come up with a wonderful game that is fun and exactly what I’d hoped it would be. The feedback I’ve gotten from everyone, including strangers has been very positive, and my inner child couldn’t be more delighted.”—Jared Horton (creator)
You can get the game for $24 on Amazon, where it’s being sold by friends and business partners of Horton (which is why you see it listed as “Witty Emporium” rather than “Petulant Pudgies”) who helped him put the finishing touches on the game before it went to market. However, it’s also available directly from his own site for $30 in case you prefer to buy that way.

]]>I was the kid who spent way too much of my free time gaming. Maybe not the games your kids are playing, as mine were often solo: Kingdom Hearts and the like, Skyrim, fantasy games about dragons or defeating The Darkness. I was definitely the kid who barely socialized. Even now, I don’t leave my house all that often, and I still spend an awful lot of my freetime gaming.
I love video games. I play a lot of video games. Some would say too much video gaming. And you know what? I’m fine.
I got a new game for my birthday. Almost exactly three weeks later, according to the stats on my computer, I finished it in exactly 90.2 hours. That means 30 hours a week. Maybe 4 hours a day. Some might argue that’s too much online.
But you know what else I did in that time?
I saw friends I hadn’t seen for a while. I held a board game night at my house. I went out for lunch. I worked my full-time job. I performed in a Purim Play for my Rabbi (I was Speaker #3; it wasn’t a huge investment).
Should parents worry about their teens’ gaming habits? Addiction certainly exists. Also, kids aren’t typically great at time management. But if your kid’s main hobby is playing video games, I wouldn’t worry so much about the time they’re playing games. It’s probably better to focus on teaching them about personal boundaries. Here’s why.
So, here’s the thing. I have A LOT of online friends — many more than I have in real life. And I met so many of them through gaming chatrooms, both on live Twitch streams and through Discord, not to mention social media accounts like Twitch and Tumblr.
I can tell you from experience, and my friends can tell you too, that online friendships can be just as real and fulfilling as offline friendships.
That being said, online safety is important and a lot of kids do not take that seriously enough.
Gaming chats can also be just an absolute cesspool of the worst of humanity. Slurs and hate speech, harassment, and bullying — these dangers are real, and they are awful. The culture around gaming can be toxic. And kids learn behaviors from older gamers. I’ve noticed that boys, particularly, scream slurs when they’re losing, and some of the things they say to girls (of any age) in an online space is disgusting. My fear is that these kids will go on to emulate that toxic online behavior in real life.
Parents, please please please pay attention to your kid if they’re playing competitive online games, ESPECIALLY if they’re playing online shooters. I’m sure this will be out of date by the time I’ve even written them down, but is your kid playing Call of Duty? Overwatch? Valorant? Fortnite? I urge you to listen in and pay attention to what everyone is saying to each other. You can use this as an opportunity to teach your kids what is and isn’t okay to say. It matters if they’re saying terrible things on screen. It’s not just words on a computer. There are real people on the receiving end of their words.
What is a gacha game you may ask? These are the games that run mostly on microtransactions. Do you remember Candy Crush? When you lose three lives, you have to wait an hour to try again, unless — Do you want to pay just a few extra bucks to get those lives back early? You have to make your decision now, before the timer runs out. Do you want to play more? You can play right now, all it will cost you is just a “little bit” of money.
Now imagine accidentally spending hundreds or even thousands of dollars on that. Lives can get ruined here.
Genshin Impact. Pokemon Masters. Revue Starlight Re LIVE. Heck, Fortnite too. These all have gacha games embedded in them. If your kid is playing a game that has a gambling aspect to it, please make sure they understand what’s really going on. They’re being asked to spend real money. Real money that you or they probably want to spend somewhere else. I know so many people who accidentally dropped hundreds of dollars on a gacha game. The temptation is real, and my friends will tell you it starts young.
I made all sorts of friends in school. But I can tell you that in real life and online, I made (and continue to make) most of my best friends by playing video games. Currently, I have a huge group of online friends that I game with almost every weekend. As an awkward, nerdy girl who struggles with meeting new people, the friends I’ve made through gaming have been a wonderfully bright spot in my life.
Some of the most creative people I’ve ever met are playing video games and making gorgeous fanart and even writing fanfiction. Others pick up programming. Some learn how to edit videos, or even just become more comfortable with themselves by setting up a video camera and recording themselves having a good time. Maybe your kid can turn their love of gaming into a creative project, too!
Try asking your kids what they love about the games they’re playing, or what they’d change about the games if they could. Help them dig into those ideas by asking them to explain and show you. It’s exciting for a kid to discover they know more about something than you do!
Do I play video games a lot? Yes, I’m willing to admit that. I also watch a lot of anime and spend a lot of time on social media. Even so, I have a social life, a job, and a dog that gets fed (mostly) on time. I’m in my 20’s living a happy and fulfilled life.
Parents of gamers: I promise, there’s hope.

However, that wasn’t always the case, and back in the day, you’d find Queen Bey on the promo circuit the same as any of her peers.
What that means is there are plenty of interview moments from the early years of the Formation singer’s career that may have totally slipped your mind.
Remember, for example, when she and Alison Hammond whipped out a board game classic? Or when Reggie Yates tried to school her in local lingo?
Here’s a selection of Beyoncé interview moments you’ve probably completely forgotten about…
Beyoncé paid a visit to Tyra Banks’ talk show a number of times over the years, but it’s the above clip that most stands out to us.
The former Top Model judge decided to have a bit of fun with her guest with a bit of word-play, culminating in questions like “Seancé… if you could communicate with anyone who’s passed on, who would it be?”, “Brie-oncé… what’s your favourite type of cheese?” and “Grey-oncé… when you get older, are you going to dye your hair?”.
By the time you get to, “If I Were A Tolstoy… can you do a Russian accent?”, you might be questioning whether the whole thing was a fever dream, but we assure you it was all real.
Obviously Beyoncé’s iconic duet with Alexandra Burke at the X Factor final is one for the absolute ages, but who remembers her slightly awks encounter with Dermot O’Leary afterwards, during which he called her “hun” while trying to steer the conversation back onto her upcoming tour.
This appearance on The View in 2010 alongside her mum (shout-out to the icon that is Tina Lawson) is best remembered for when Whoopi Goldberg pointed out: “You are Beyoncé.” Bey’s response? “Thank you.”
Beyoncé was clearly rather bewildered when Reggie Yates tried to get her to discuss some of London’s top football clubs, Tottenham and Arsenal – to the extent she had to double-check he wasn’t making her “curse”.
Almost 20 years later, Bey would bring her already-legendary Renaissance tour to Tottenham’s grounds for a whopping five-night stint (and despite her previous struggles to say the word “arsenal” she managed it not once but twice on the Renaissance cut Plastic Off The Sofa).
While Alison Hammond is these days known for making headlines thanks to her interviews with A-listers like Lady Gaga, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and, of course, Harrison Ford, she previously shared the screen with Bey while the singer was promoting her I Am… Sasha Fierce album.
After trying out some body percussion, Alison whipped out a game of Connect 4, much to the Grammy winner’s delight.
Did Alison let her win? Well, probably. But wouldn’t you?!
Beyoncé’s appearance at the Super Bowl Half-Time in 2013 really was show-stopping… in more ways than one.
After she took to the stage, there was a 30-minute black-out in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome stadium, which fans joked was due to the sheer power of Beyoncé (although, we should point out, her performance was not actually to blame).
Joking about it backstage, she surprised many when she quoted the then-recent viral sensation Kimberly Wilkins (better known to most as Sweet Brown) when she declared: “Lord Jesus it’s a fire!”
Sadly, the above video cuts out right when John Travolta is about to speak, so we’ve been deprived of his take on the matter…
This candid Destiny’s Child interview from over 20 years ago went viral fairly recently, with fans suggesting the trio might have been a little *ahem* refreshed while sitting down with this reporter in Amsterdam.
According to Beyoncé herself, though, this was not the case.
“That video was after a 16-hour press day,” she insisted back in 2019, adding: “Not marijuana!”
Horror-comedy “The Blackening” started as a way to skewer a tired trope: the frequency with which Black characters are killed first in horror movies. Though this cliché has been called out frequently by horror fans and Black audiences, here it serves as the entire premise for a feature film, posing a provocative question: if all the characters in the horror movie are Black, who dies first?
A 2018 Comedy Central sketch by the comedy group 3PEAT was the proof of concept for “The Blackening,” and the video, in which a group of friends debate “who’s the Blackest?” while a psycho killer stalks at the door, went viral. For the feature, the star and writer of the sketch, comedian and Emmy-nominated TV writer Dewayne Perkins partnered with writer/producer Tracy Oliver (“Girls Trip”) and director Tim Story (“Barbershop”) to expand the idea to feature length. Perkins also stars as Dewayne, one of the central members of a group of tight-knit college friends who descend on a rural country home for a weekend getaway and celebratory reunion for the Juneteenth holiday.
A group of friends in a remote location staying in a mysterious old cabin — we can assume what happens next — but “The Blackening” seeks to test our assumptions, using a slasher movie formula as a vehicle for fast, funny and whip-smart cultural commentary.
The party crackles with a tension fueled by long interpersonal histories and resentments, amped up by booze, psychedelics and a weird old college chum in their midst, Clifton (Jermaine Fowler). In a mysterious game room, they stumble upon a board game called The Blackening, and a closed-circuit television that reveals their host Morgan (Yvonne Orji) has been abducted by a leather-faced killer. The unsettlingly racist caricature at the center of the game torments them with increasingly challenging trivia questions about Black history and culture, with the goal of saving Morgan, but soon the stakes are heightened — they have to choose “the Blackest” among them to sacrifice.
“The Blackening” fires on all cylinders when the friends are dissecting Black culture, puzzling through questions about how many Black characters appeared on “Friends,” the mathematics of Nas songs, the merits of various Aunt Vivs on “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.” The dialogue feels like the way friends actually talk to each other, laden with movie and TV references, lovingly roasting each other.
The social commentary swings from the pop to the political, all with the same light but incisive tone, which is what makes “The Blackening” both entertaining and trenchant. But the film is lacking in terms of its suspense and horror filmmaking. It’s not scary, the villain seems obvious from the jump, and there are a few missed opportunities and loose ends, story-wise. It succeeds as a comedy but not quite as a horror film, the genre merely a setting and style for sending up insidious character stereotypes.
However, a star is indeed born in “The Blackening.” Screenwriter Perkins delivers the breakout performance as the ultra-bothered Dewayne, who is feuding with his best friend Lisa (Antoinette Robertson) over her reunion with the formerly philandering Nnamdi (Sinqua Walls). Though it’s an ensemble piece (X Mayo is also a standout), your attention never leaves Perkins when he’s on-screen. Perhaps because he wrote and performed in the original sketch and wrote the screenplay, he seems more finely attuned to the rhythms and nuances of the material, and the purpose that it is intended to serve.
Consider “The Blackening” not just a sendup, but a send-off to this old cliché. Here’s to finally killing “the Black character dies first” trope once and for all, and crossing our fingers that it doesn’t pop up again, Michael Myers style.

]]>School’s out for the summer and, if you’ve got kiddos in tow, your house is about to get a whole lot busier. Sure, you’ve got summer camps and play dates lined up, not to mention the kiddie pool and water wings are inflated and waiting — but how are you going to keep your motley crew creatively challenged for the three-month stretch without spending a lot of cash?
We’ve rounded up a few kid-approved projects that involve nothing more than some basic digital design skills, a dash of creativity, and a printer that can tackle scanning and printing loads of pages, like the cartridge-free Epson EcoTank ET-4850 — a great fit whether you’re using it for your small home office or for your at-home kiddos (or both!). With each of the Epson EcoTank ET-4850 bottle sets equivalent to about 80 ink cartridges*, the only limit to these activities will be your kid’s imagination — and how long they can go without needing a nap.
If you have a budding bookworm or doodler in your den, spark their creative skills by helping them make their very own book. Whether they write a fictional story about your hairless cat or make a zine about their skatepark pals, all you need to do is put their words and scanned illustrations into your design platform of choice, print it out, and staple it together as an official book.
Your tiniest tots can also create their own book with paper, crayons, and stickers. Once their scribbles are complete, just use a versatile printer to scan and print out the pages so they look seamless. If your kiddo is a perfectionist, no worries. All Epson EcoTank printers come with a ridiculous amount of ink, so you can print as many revisions as it takes.
Create and print your own pages, or use this site for free printable storybook templates. It’s free with an account, but there is a cap on downloads, so choose your favorite!
Want an activity that challenges your crew’s cognitive skills and keeps them out of your hair? Customize your own board game together and watch them disappear into their room to play for hours. First off, you’ll need to piece together a board (obviously) to keep the game pieces moving. Ask your kids to help with the design and, if they need a thought starter, grab their favorite board games off the shelf for inspiration.
Next, create the shape in your go-to design platform and let your kids gamify the board with cool colors, emojis, and graphics. Encourage them to make the game moves fun, like ‘clean up the dog poop in the yard’ instead of ‘go to jail’. When you’re ready to print out the board, you’ll want to use a high-tech printer to make the graphics pop — the Epson EcoTank ET-4850 really kills it here — and then affix your print-out to a piece of cardboard. Lastly, find some small game pieces, buttons and barrettes will do the trick, grab a set of dice, and it’s game on.
This site has some great printable templates for board games. Just create an account, find your perfect board (there’s a cap on free downloads), print it out, and get gaming! Encourage your child to get creative and design something that represents their interests and aspiring gaming adventures.
It’s no big secret that kids love wearing masks (and fairy skirts and Halloween costumes in summer). Lucky for you, making homemade masks is easy, affordable, and a super-fun way to spend a summer afternoon with your crew. First up, ask your kids what kind of mask they want to make. It can be a superhero mask, their favorite animal, or a masquerade-type mask that just covers their eyes — anything goes.
Once you have the image uploaded and properly sized for your kid’s face, print it out on a printer that can deftly handle cardstock. Next, cut out the mask and let your kids jazz it up with glitter, feathers, and colorful cut-outs. Use a hole punch to make two holes, thread some ribbon or heavy-duty string through, and get ready for your kids to wear their new mask absolutely everywhere — the park, the supermarket, in the car. Really, they may never want to take it off.
There are tons of printable mask options on the internet — we love the free downloadable ones here, and while some restrictions on usage may apply to the ones on this site, the creative possibilities are endless!
Just because school’s out for the summer doesn’t mean the hands-on creativity — or your quiet time — has to end. Having good old-fashioned projects to keep your kids busy is a breeze with a little craftiness and the right tech tools. Who knows? You might end up having a blast, too.
*Individual cartridges estimate based on print yields of a replacement set of black and color ink bottles as compared to Epson standard-capacity ink cartridges for similarly featured printers as of April 2023.
]]>Outdoorsmen on Reddit have recently been detailing terrifying encounters they’ve had in nature, so we’ve gathered some of their most unsettling stories below. We hope this list won’t deter you from going on that camping trip you've been looking forward to, but it may serve as a friendly reminder to always be aware of your surroundings when in the woods.

To hear what inspired this conversation in the first place, we reached out to Reddit user Inevitable-Print-702, who posed the question, "Outdoorsmen of Reddit, what’s your most terrifying encounter in the woods?" Lucky for us, he was happy to have a chat with Bored Panda.
"I started this conversation because nature can be both amazing and frightening. I wanted to hear what other people had to say about some of their most frightening experiences in nature," the OP shared.

We were also curious how often Inevitable-Print-702 goes venturing into the wild. "I don’t know if I would consider myself an outdoorsman because I don’t get out in nature as much as I would like to because of where I live," he shared. "But when I do get the chance, I definitely enjoy it!"
And he still has some scary stories to tell. "The most frightening experience for me was when I was walking on a trail and ended up reaching this one path that had about 50-60 banana spiders all bigger than my hands," he told Bored Panda. "Having to duck and avoid them was enough to make my hairs stand up!"

The OP also says that it's possible for some people to have less frightening experiences than others in the woods, as "there’s always going to be some people who get luckier and have a more pleasant time."
"However, I do think there is always an inherent danger when going out in nature," he added. "After all, you’re entering something's home, so it is important to be safe."

Inevitable-Print-702 shared that he found the responses to his post fascinating. "I didn’t expect the conversation to take off like it did, but seeing everyone’s stories and responses was very intriguing. It was awesome to hear the stories, but it further reaffirmed my belief that you must remain vigilant when going into nature."
"I think it was interesting that most of the frightening responses included other people," he continued. "For example, a lot of the stories included random strange men just wandering. Also, one that stuck out was someone saying they saw a severed ear on a trail. That definitely fits the description of a frightening experience in the outdoors."

Finally, the OP added that "outdoors can be both amazing and scary. I believe that everyone should experience nature and it’s beauty, but they should also remember to be safe."
Enjoy reading through these stories, pandas, and then if you're interested in checking out another Bored Panda list discussing terrifying things people have witnessed in real life, look no further than right here!

Moreover, many working adults are also parents. Parenting and working full-time can be a struggle, particularly if you are a single parent trying to advance your career. Luckily, there are ways to achieve work-life harmony if you are a single parent, co-parenting, or somewhere in between. Find out how to parent effectively while keeping up with your job using the following techniques.
Parent With Mindfulness
Each working parent has a different situation. Instead of lumping yourself in with everyone else and accepting a stressful routine, approach life mindfully. A little preparation goes a long way when attempting to balance work with parenting.
Create Memories Purposefully
If you’re working all the time, you may be worried that you’re missing monumental moments with your children. However, you can still create memories with your kids that will last a lifetime with a little planning. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself to create the “perfect” day, though — often, the best memories just involve simple activities like reading together or laughing over a board game.
If you are struggling to come up with activities that your children will cherish, ask them what they would like to do. This could be a great jumping-off point to lead you in the right direction, and your kids will feel seen and heard at the same time. Schedule a day off to do whatever they would like, within reason of course. This dedication to spending quality time with your kids will not be overlooked.
Acknowledge Your Child’s Specific Needs
Each child is different. The parenting methods that work best for you don’t have to — and likely won’t — look the same as those of other parents that you know or see on the internet. Try to filter out the noise and take an in-depth look at your particular situation. Identify the specific needs of your child in order to create an action plan that works well with your job schedule and parenting preferences.
For example, you could have a baby that experiences separation anxiety when they are with anyone but you. First and foremost, realize that this is normal. Babies and toddlers are ingrained with a need to be near their primary caregivers. In fact, it’s primal and crucial to their development. For this reason, take the age of your child into consideration when setting up a work schedule.
Seek Flexible Work Environments
In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, U.S. work environments are more flexible. This opens up the possibilities for you as a working parent to find a job that suits your specific schedule. After assessing your child’s specific needs, take into consideration what work hours and benefits you would need to make addressing those needs possible.
This includes scheduling in time for your kids and yourself. There are certain workplace implementations that can make your life easier. As an employed or job-seeking parent, look for workplace benefits like:
Many companies will tout an inclusive culture and be unwilling to back up this claim. Try to do as much research as possible to figure out whether an employer will be willing to meet your needs as a working parent. Look at employee reviews on Glassdoor and specifically search for your specific needs, such as flexible work hours. Working with a company that acknowledges the unique considerations and goals of employed parents is integral to your success.
Identify Your Unique Goals
If you expect your employer to be considerate of your goals as a working parent, you have to be clear about them in the first place. For instance, if you’d like to advance your career as a single parent, identify the steps you need to take to get where you want to be. This can look like:
You don’t have to put yourself in a “working parent” box. However, it helps to establish your unique goals through the lens of someone who wants to advance in their career but also excels in their parenting duties. It’s possible to do so if you plan ahead and get a little support along the way.
Don’t Be Afraid To Ask for Help
If you’re a working parent, you may fall into the trap of wanting to do everything yourself. While this is noble, it can be advantageous to ask for help. If you try to do everything, you may end up burnt out and performing poorly at work and at home. Tap into the resources you have available to you to prevent this from happening. These can include:
Make an itemized list of all of your duties and see what can practically get done. Then, look for resources to optimize these tasks.
Set Boundaries
In order to avoid burning yourself out trying to do everything at work and for your kids, you also need to set boundaries. Especially when working from home, the line between work and parenting life can blur. It’s important to set clear boundaries with your employer and your family to let them know what hours you will be working. This way, your family time isn’t disrupted by work and vice versa.
Moving Forward as a Working Parent
Remember to also set boundaries with yourself. Don’t let time for yourself fall by the wayside just to take care of work duties or spend extra time with your kids. There are ways to be a great parent and employee while not sacrificing your mental and physical well-being. In fact, this is the best way to show up completely in all aspects of your life.

Saul Martinez, for the Deseret News
Archie Milward, a 34-year-old doorman in New York City, feels guilty every time he gets a text from the elders asking him if he’s going to make it to services at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’s chapel in Woodside.
“I’m like, ‘Hey, I have work,’” he said, leaning on a podium in an ornately decorated foyer of a building on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. He wants to go to church, of course, but he works Sundays. To attend services, he would have to use a sick day, he said, “And I only have 12 for the whole year; I save them.”
Milward, who immigrated to America from the Philippines in 1999, was raised Catholic but followed his wife into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He recalls seeing her engrossed in her studies; her focus piqued his curiosity. When he asked her about her faith and about the church, “She said, ‘Why don’t you pray about it?’ And here I am now,” said Milward.
Although he rarely attends church on Sundays, mostly due to his work schedule, Milward still calls himself religious. On Monday and Tuesday evenings, after he gets home from work, he and his wife pray together. But even being consistent with such simple, at-home worship is hard because of shift work, said Milward, who works the graveyard shifts on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
And Milward feels that he and his wife can only go so far in their faith alone. “Getting to where we need (to be) is a challenge without guidance from the elders,” he said.
Nationwide, there are scores of working class Americans who, like Milward, define themselves as religious but who do not attend church, synagogue or mosque. And it points to a paradox that has implications for both the current state of American religion as well as the future of our nation’s religious institutions — while working-class Americans embrace the religious label in rates almost as high as the middle- and upper-middle-class, working class Americans are the least likely to go to services according to “The State of the Working Class,” a new report compiled by the Deseret News and HarrisX.
When asked about the importance of religion in their lives, 71% of Americans who self-identified as lower class said it was very or somewhat important, and 65% of the working poor and working class said the same. Lower-middle-class Americans reported that religion was very or somewhat important to them at a rate of 67%; 71% of both the middle- and upper-middle-class Americans said religion played a very or somewhat important role in their lives.
Upper-class respondents ranked the highest on this measure, with 80% reporting that religion was very or somewhat important to them.
Respondents who self-identified as either “lower class,” “working poor,” or “working class,” were the most likely to say that they “almost never” attend religious services. The higher one was on the income ladder, the more likely they were to attend church, synagogue or mosque.
While the incomes of interviewees who identified as working class varied widely, the bulk reported making between $15,000 to $99,999 annually. (It’s worth noting that some Americans who made over $100,000 a year also identified as working class — pointing perhaps, to the psychological impact of the nation’s spiraling cost of living.)
But it’s not just shift work. There are a variety of reasons that working-class Americans are unlikely to be found in the pews, ranging from identity politics to the fact that religious institutions — and civic participation more broadly — are dominated by more highly educated Americans and members of the middle and upper class, according to Phil Schwadel, a sociology professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Education and cultural background also play a role. Middle- and upper-class Americans “have been socialized to play a bigger part in American life,” said Schwadel, who adds that these groups are more likely to be involved in volunteering, Parent Teacher Associations, as well as unofficial organizations like book clubs. Together, this gives middle- and upper-class Americans broader social networks and a greater sense of belonging.
While this story of lopsided religious and civic participation is decades old, Schwadel says he believes this trend has been exacerbated over time. And as the middle class and upper class dominate religious institutions, they also come to shape them, leading to a runaway process in which lower-class and less educated Americans feel increasingly unwelcome in churches where they don’t see themselves reflected. Qualitative research also suggests that, sometimes, struggling single mothers feel “looked down upon and unwelcome (at church) because they don’t have the same sort of self-presentation as middle-class people,” said Schwadel.
And while middle- and upper-class Americans are more likely to attend church on a regular basis, Schwadel said, “they’re less likely to hold certain kinds of religious beliefs, especially the more conservative or strict beliefs.” Schwadel pointed out that these sorts of differences can lead to splintering; rifts in the United Methodist Church offer a dramatic example of where this process can lead. In that case, he says, upper- and middle-class Americans wanted the church to be more “LGBTQ+ affirming,” something that didn’t sit well with everyone.
The manner in which the middle and upper class has shaped the American church is “one reason Americans are much more likely to switch denominations than they used to be,” Schwadel said. When people aren’t comfortable with the culture of their current church or feel like they don’t fit in, they strike out in search of something new — which accounts for some of the growth of nondenominational Protestant churches, according to Schwadel, who added, “more Protestants are now nondenominational than belong to specific denominations.”
But when people who identify as religious leave their church seeking a better fit and don’t find one, they often stop going altogether.
Jason Rogeriski is a 46-year-old diesel mechanic who identifies as a nondenominational Christian but doesn’t attend church. In his native Southern Illinois, he felt like those who attended religious services on a regular basis thought they were better than everyone else and were hypocritical. When he moved to Jupiter, Florida, at the age of 19 and went to services, Rogeriski felt like church attendees were an “old boys’ network.” Feeling like an outsider, he didn’t go back.
Today, Rogeriski, who resists classifications like Democrat and Republican, says he resents that church leaders try to teach congregants how to think — he views this as a throwback to the pre-revolutionary days when America was a British colony and the Church of England was used to control the early settlers.
In some cases, even as people have left churches, they’ve retained the religious label, according to Daniel Cox of the American Enterprise Institute. Defining oneself as religious continues to be meaningful or, perhaps, they’re still holding on to some of the basic tenets of the religion. But the identity “isn’t connected to a particular community or religious behavior,” said Cox.
In other cases, non-churchgoers have embraced the label precisely because it is associated with a particular community.
“Christian identity is becoming increasingly fused with politics,” said Cox. For many, the label doesn’t translate exclusively to belief in Christian doctrine nor as membership in a particular Christian community. Rather, being Christian is conflated with particular political values or issues, said Cox, who pointed to data from Pew Research Center that showed strong Trump supporters were more likely to newly identify as evangelical “because of its association with Trump and conservative politics.” But that doesn’t necessarily translate to church attendance — additional research has identified Americans “who aren’t Christian identifying as evangelical or born again because of its association with Trump and conservative politics,” said Cox.
This shift to “political evangelicalism” has serious implications for both those who actually attend religious institutions as well as the pastors that lead them, observers say.
Similarly, claiming the “religious” label without partaking in the institution or community could be due to politics. But there could also be a sociological explanation, Cox added.
“The sociological one has to do with the decline in America’s civic and social architecture. The last 20 to 30 years have seen a big decline in different activities and membership-based organizations, religion being a big one, obviously. People are not as active in these spaces and these places, but they’ve retained the label. It could well be meaningful for them, but it’s not connected to a particular community or religious behavior,” said Cox.
Cox believes that the shift towards a gig economy could also be playing a role in declining attendance among certain groups. Opening opportunities for work, but disrupting a regular Monday through Friday, nine to five schedule, gig culture leaves people “forced to make difficult decisions,” said Cox.
Chae Logan MacLea, 38, is a part-time preschool teacher who lives in Palm Beach Gardens with her husband and their two daughters, ages 8 and 4. MacLea and her husband, who manages technology for a baseball team that does spring training in South Florida, make just under $100,000 dollars a year in an area where, MacLea noted, a decent home costs “around half a million dollars.”
In the past, MacLea made it to Catholic catechism classes with her eldest child, who had first communion last year. Since then, the family hasn’t been attending church, despite the fact that MacLea still identifies as religious.
A lack of family-friendly programming leaves MacLea feeling that church leaders are out of touch with the needs and wants of the flock. “I don’t feel that the girls get very much out of the church,” said MacLea. “It does not cater to young families and they get bored.”
She also feels that their lifestyle is similar to that of a lower income family due to her husband’s work schedule. “He will go to work at six in the morning and will come home at seven or eight at night,” said MacLea. “He doesn’t get many Sundays off.”
And when he does, he either wants to spend it sleeping in or they want to enjoy the time together as a family, she said.
Regardless of whether or not MacLea attends services, she considers herself religious. The value of going to church, she reflected, is the “history ... the teaching of how Jesus lived and how we can treat each other.”

Addition/Subtraction or Multiplication/Division Math Games
Just a quick statement, but I had several games listed here for basic math facts, but sadly most of those games are out of print now, that is the hard part of bringing up unique games, some aren’t as popular and just go out of print.
As I mentioned in the opening paragraph, pretty much any early game that has you rolling more than one die will practice addition.
Shopping/Money Math Games
**** A side note, both Monopoly and Game of Life have electronic boardgame versions that use credit cards, be careful with these because it will take away some of the math skills practiced****
Geometry/Spatial Reasoning Math Games
*side note, for whatever reason I don’t do well at these, so I don’t tend to like them as much*
**I have several more geometry/spatial reasoning games that will be included in the history gameschooling.
Probability and Statistics Math Games
*techinically any game can teach you this if you count cards, or if you know the likelihood of rolling a certain number.
Homemade Math Games
Here’s my overall plan for this series:

According to University Games, the fast-funding initiative will accelerate the production of the game and, if it all goes as well as previous campaigns, the company will have an international release of Faeries & Magical Creatures in selected countries for Fall of 2023.
Designed by the inventor of Raccoon Tycoon, Mosaic, Railroad Rivals, and Age of Empires, and featuring the lush oil paintings of renowned artist Annie Stegg Gerard, Faeries & Magical Creatures has the pieces in place for a beautiful, spellbinding and challengingly fun new game.
The game was tested and refined with women and with men, with gamers and casual game players, to make sure that the gameplay, as well as the theme and content, appeal to a wider audience than most Kickstarter games. In addition to stunning, classic fairies, the game features a centaur, unicorn, minotaur, troll and other characters that broaden its appeal. “The Faerie Realm that is created in Faeries & Magical Creatures offers an amazing, engaging setting for a strategy game,” noted Bob Moog, President of University Games, “and the passionate fan base of the mythology and folklore combined with the fans of Annie Stegg Gerard’s elegant art gives us an enthusiastic foundation for this great new game.”
With pre-launch ads running on popular gaming sites, such as Board Game Geek, as well as mentions and pre-release graphics leaked on social media, Faeries & Magical Creatures is already sourcing a crowd of followers in its development. Forbidden Games expected to draw a lot of interest from fans of Wingspan, Splendor, Azul and Villainous, but is also seeing crossover from the Lord of the Rings art crowd.
Slated for a midsummer’s month of nights (June through July) on Kickstarter, consumers can sign up now to be notified of the launch. Early backing ensures a front row seat as this game is brought to life. Forbidden Games is prepared to reward the earliest backers of Faeries & Magical Creatures with exclusive items and access to content from the game, including an exclusive production of the Faeries & Magical Creatures Premium Limited Edition, a poster and gift box with 4×6 prints of the mythical characters.
Faeries & Magical Creatures is being designed for 2-4 players, ages 10 and up, with an average playtime of 60 minutes. Fans can also join Forbidden Games’ team of creators to play through the game at Gen Con this August.
About Forbidden Games: Forbidden Games is a board game publishing company founded in 2019, and is best known for games with mass appeal, such as Raccoon Tycoon, Mosaic, Railroad Rivals, and Lizard Wizard. Raccoon Tycoon and Mosaic appear on multiple Top 100 of All-Time Lists from Dice Tower and other prestigious game review websites. Acquired by University Games in 2022, Forbidden Games will continue to bring exciting innovations to the tabletop gaming market while maintaining the integrity and great gameplay that consumers have grown to expect from the company. ]]>A few weeks ago, we told you about Overlords In Training, the fresh new game currently on Kickstarter by Catalyst Game Labs’ new Board Game Division. Thankfully, we were able to get our hands on a not-quite-final but very close copy of the game, and were able to play through a full session.
Here’s a video of that playthrough:
We had a blast playing, but if you aren’t game (ha, ha) to watch the full hour and a half, here’s the highlights:
Right away, we learned that setting up Overlords In Training is pretty simple. The steps are laid out pretty well, and while I was able to do a tiny bit of prep before hitting record, it wasn’t really necessary to save any time. Players choose their mini boss to play, some tokens get placed, decks are shuffled, and off you go – almost. There’s one final deck setup that creates an important game mechanic: first you split the main deck into four mostly equal piles, and then you follow instructions to place boss leveling and appearance cards into those piles, eventually creating the deck you’ll actually play with.
Each mini boss does have a special power that costs a certain number of level 1 cards to use. We were NOT prepared for that initially, and in future games I’m sure we’ll all look pretty closely at that cost when choosing a mini boss to play, as well as the power itself. Some of us benefited far more than the others from our powers.
The first and foremost thing I feel is important to note: don’t play timidly. This game is fast paced, and while you might be a more strategic player who likes to save their attacks for later, this is not the game for it. We discovered that when we hit the first boss leveling card and read the rules for what happens when that card appears. Unfortunately, we had all been playing too carefully and Mike, the boss, was irritated with us. That irritation led to extra strength for him for the end of the game when he would appear. We all burst into action after that, and our battles were frequent and bloody after that.
Many times throughout the game, we laughed at the artwork and flavor text on the cards. Despite being a game that can very easily be understood and enjoyed by kids, most adults can also appreciate the humor and quirky characters.
In this game, I lucked out and destroyed all of my opponents’ bases before Mike could be irritated enough to come out and fight us all. As a result, I won by domination and no one had to suffer the initial leveling that Mike did because of our timidity. Having proved my superiority (or, rather, sheer luck), I proved myself the best mini boss and became Mike’s newest Overlord.
We may need to create a traveling trophy of some sort for our gaming group, because I imagine this is going to be one of those games that people want to play frequently enough to justify a physical reminder of the last winner.
Overlords In Training is still live on Kickstarter at the time of this writing. I highly recommend you get a copy, because it’s a deceptively simple game with some really nice twists, and it deserves to be made.

]]>World of Horror, the Junji-Ito-inspired roguelike RPG from developer Paweł Koźmiński, leaves PC early access on 19th October and releases for PlayStation and Switch on the same day.
World of Horror initially launched into PC early access a little over three years ago, and its deliciously nasty tale of a seaside town beseiged by malevolent cosmic forces - which players must investigate over the course of five randomly selected mysteries each playthrough - has slowly expanded with new stories, events, and features since then.
If you've not yet hopped onboard World of Horror's early access, the whole thing plays out something like a 1-bit version of the board game Arkham Horror, albeit with Lovecraftian overtones traded for something closer to Junji Ito's distinct brand of the mundane run amok - so think high school terror, haunted bulletin board systems, and so on.
]]>Well, the Magic Booster box sale was a success, so we decided to add to the discounted pile, and they will be available till this Friday. This Saturday and Sunday (06/10 & 06/11) everything in the store will be 25% off [with the normal exclusions*] Finally, June 25th, all $1.00 comics will be .25¢. So, mark your calendars!
