After The Witcher and DCEU, Henry Cavill Announces His Upcoming Warhammer 40K Project With Amazon

After taking off the red Superman cape, Henry Cavill took to Instagram this week with a major piece of news — one that has thousands of fans excited for the actor’s next big venture.

Next to an animation of a Warhammer 40,000 sigil, Cavil wrote: “For 30 years I have dreamt of seeing a Warhammer universe in live action. Now, after 22 years of experience in this industry, I finally feel that I have the skill set and experience to guide a Warhammer Cinematic Universe into life.”

“Partnering with Natalie Viscuso at Vertigo has been a blessing beyond words. Without her we might not have found the perfect home at Amazon,” he said. “And having a home like Amazon will give us the freedom to be true to the massive scope of Warhammer. To all of you Warhammer fans out there, I promise to respect this IP that we love. I promise to bring you something familiar. And I endeavour to bring you something fantastic that is, as of yet, unseen.”

The Warhammer 40k series began back in the 1980s as a tabletop board game, and has enjoyed something of a renaissance across the last few years — gathering legions of fans with its videogame series, novels, fan-made content, and the tabletop game itself, which is now in it’s ninth edition.

The Warhammer 40k universe is set several centuries in the future — where humanity ekes out a brutal, bloody existence while surrounded by countless hordes of alien species, demonic monsters, skeletal androids and other creatures that stretch the limits of sci-fi — evolving its own unique ‘grimdark’ aesthetic that’s caught the eye of Cavill for years. Similar to his interest in the Witcher series, Cavill’s knowledge and expertise with this world often pops up in interviews — much to the delight of a fanbase that has rallied behind the actor for a few years now.

Here’s what Twitter had to say about Cavill’s entry into the Warhammer 40,000 universe:

Cavill will not only star, but also serve as an executive producer for the series — something that has fans quite excited. While lackluster reviews of the Rings of Power series has some critical of Amazon’s first Warhammer 40k outing, the studio has done a phenomenal job with The Boys — a similarly gritty, dark, and violent show.

While no writers or showrunners are attached yet to the series, Amazon has secured the rights as of today — signing off Cavill’s next big franchise adventure.
