Boy Jesus at the Temple game

As I brainstormed ideas for boy Jesus at the Temple, one of my very first ideas was this board game. I could just picture how much fun it would be to have Mary and Joseph wandering around Jerusalem until they found Jesus. I tinkered around with different board games and finally settle on this Boy Jesus at the Temple game.

Why I designed the game this way

I played this with my kids, and immediately my boys had a list of ideas to improve and basically completely change how the game is played.

But I made the game easy to play for a reason:

  • This game can be easily played in 5-10 minutes which is the perfect amount of time for a Sunday School class.
  • You can quickly add in new people to a game if you’ve started with 2 players, you could easily add in 2-3 more players (each board game can have a max of 5 players, 1 per building that is not the temple).
  • If you’re not having to think too much, it gives you more time to talk. You can sit and talk with your kids students and see what’s going on with their life. It’s lots of little moments like this that will add up to big moments of trust.

All right, let’s play Find Jesus at the Temple

playing the Bible game

It’s pretty straightforward. Each person starts at a building, no child you may not all start at the same building.

One good thing about playtesting with teens, they look for all the loopholes. ALL THE LOOPHOLES.

Then we played through, it’s pretty simple, you roll the die and move that many spaces. When you reach a new building you draw a card and find out if Mary and Joseph found out where to look next.

Now my boys were trying for the plan of always going to the same place over and over again, but I said you couldn’t do that.

Yes, I’m terribly horribly mean and they complained.

I guess you could let them do that, but I wanted to have them try playing it without power-gaming.

In the end, I still lost horribly as they happily beat me in finding out where Jesus was.

I can’t even win games that are 100% chance.

Poor Ticia, I can’t win the games I invented, obviously, I need to input some Calvinball rules into my Bible games.

Oh well, I still had fun playing Find Jesus at the Temple game, even if I lost.

Again.

I have more Bible games you can pick up besides my Jesus at the Temple game. And there are a few I’ve bought (and a few more I need to play and give you an overview of the game).
